Question: “Why with the advancement in technology, is there not a way to have elections votes to be considered through an online method or done at the school sites, rather then on a weekend, when many may have other commitments?“

Thanks for the question!
One of the goals of the executive is to improve communication and that in part includes implementing various programs and technologies. We currently have 2 motions that were passed to help us move forward with this:
- motion to purchase OWL (360-degree video conferencing devices) and other electronic equipment to use for online meetings – we are in the process of sourcing this out.
- spend money to organize our online files, tech, etc. – this is also in process.
The biggest hurdle that we had to overcome was updating our Bylaws to ensure that they aligned with the CUPE National Constitution. As member of CUPE National we agree to follow their constitution, and they have guidelines around online meetings & voting that address the integrity of votes and security not only for voting but also for our members participating online.
Finding time to implement these changes, purchase the equipment, install/apply the technology, train, etc. has proven challenging – the expectation is that some of the monies from the second motion can be used to hire someone to move this along quicker.
Of course, finding the ‘best’ time for general meetings and voting will always be challenging as we have members that work from 7 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday which is why meetings have traditionally been held on weekends.
I hope I answered your question if not please reach out to me using the form below.
